Gwynn's for breakfast
Typical Saturday morning. Day off for me , but sadly not for Mary 9 seen above on car parking and traffic control duties at the Tree House. I skin up to Gwynn's where I am well looked after by Emma among others for a healthy ( usually ! ) breakfast in the smart diningrom up there. Takes me now an hour and a half so if I can get away from the mall by 7.30 , I'm up there at opening time of 9am - having seen not a sole. On this occasion above I put Private Eye and the local paper in my pack giving me a very pleasant hour's read. Then back to Two Creeks via Long Shot - see view from top looking south to Maroon Bells. 3rd pic shows the 3/4 way down sign after 4 miles of brilliant skiing. No 3 bus back to Meadow Ranch 3 minutes away and in time to get the hard working Mary's lunch ready. 5th time I've done it this season. Repeat this Saturday I hope.

A week in the life of a 'senior' Aspen ski bum
Sorry there was no narrative in last post. Technical glitch - another ! By contrast , no pic in this one - glitch again! One exception. Here is Ian, Harry, Mary and our lodger the incomparable and irrepressible Dadou after our breakfast at Gwynn's and just before Mary's private "lesson" with the latter. He is a quite remarkable instructor and arguably one of the best among 1500 Aspen/Snowmass instructors.
Harry and Ian's 10 day visit was immensely enjoyable for us. While the piste skiing was good in mostly cloudless skies, it was disappointing that they didn't get what they came 8,000 miles for - fresh powder . They had a good day up to the summit of the Highlands Bowl with Mary, Ian joined me on a skin up to Gwynns ( Harry including himself in the breakfast part of the arrangement ) and we enjoyed lots of good skiing together ( including a bit of fresh powder in Hanging Valley Wall ) and a certain amount of après ski for which the brothers seemed to have lost little appetite.
Since they left , it snowed significantly twice and powder skiing was superb I gather. Hearsay only sadly - I was working both days.
Back then to routine - but what a routine.
Sat - M working from 7 till 6 with only hour and a half for lunch. Saturdays always very busy for her with AVSC and a lot of guests giving her a hard time in the Tree House turning circle. I skinned up to Gwynn's - hour and twenty mins - arriving in time for the usual top rate breakfast. Constrained myself though to the healthy fare on the menu - granola joghart and fruit and copious coffee. Skied back to Two Creeeks via Elk Camp and Long Shot with No 3 bus 2 minutes along the road to Meadow Ranch. In time to get lunch for the exhausted Mary at 12.30.
Relaxing afternoon ( for me at any rate ! ) catching up with mail, emails, addressing US tax return issues , etc, etc.
Sun - M to Church. I drove down to El Jebel to collect Gaby and bring him back to MR. An afternoon of cooking ( brownies and quiche - his
choice ) and playing various games. Trying to teach Gaby chess - some success but a way to go. Gerry collects him from Intercept Lot saving me from a double 45 minute journey. Then M and I went in to Aspen to see The Descendents. Good but not brilliant. We're not huge George Clooney fans. Some beuatiful Hawaian scenery though reminding us of Lee and Julie.
Mon - both working . Route 3 for me 7.50 till 6.15 with hour for lunch . A good route though with 45 minute loops giving time at the Mall for reading in between. A hard day again for Mary with resort getting busier each day. Managed though some music in evening . We've picked our duet for Betty's 90th in June - a lovely Mozart piece from the "Figaro " book given to us by Amanda and her parents.
Tues- Rodeo Lot run for me on Tuesdays - ploughing up and down Brush Creek Road . 2nd day running though when conditions , esp early on, were treacherous. Much concentration required. I do enjoy these days though and enjoy the challenge - over 350 passengers for the day. Lunch on mon , tues and wed always a highlight . Used to be Spencers . Changed my allegiance to the Stewpot in the Mall. Owner Rob looks after me well. Valentines Day so M and I celebrated and had a lovely evening at Il Poggio in the village.
Wed - the least enjoyable working day of the week . Day off for M. I'm on the 1 route - Upper and Lower Woodbridge. No fun . Masses of stops all day. Tight turning circles and usually struggling to meet time schedule. Glad to have it over . 6.30 to 3. Then 2 hour session with Karina - dentist in the Village - courtesy partly of TOSV health care scheme. One of the great perks of Town employment. Covers Mary too.
Thurs - my weekend looms. Route 2 on Thursdays to Crestwood and above . 6.20 to 2.45. "Lunch" comes absurdly early at 9.30 to 10.30. I go to Big Hoss cafe in the Mall, try to eat healthily , but usually end up with stack of blueberry pancakes. Much coffee to stay alert for long 2nd half of Route 2. Highlight of week though in evening . Went to see the Met's "Live" performance of Don Giovanni in HD at the Wheeler Opera House. Quite stunning although comes 2nd in my book to Figaro.
Friday - both of us off. Up to Village Express by 9.15 and had a delightful 2 hour skiing together ( working on Dadou's tips ). Left Mary up there skiing with Fred. while his wife Barbara and I drove down to Basalt for our 2nd experimental partnership at a weekly duplicate bridge tournament. Likely to have been brought down to size ( no result yet annouinced ) after coming 1st in 7 tables - 24 hands - last week. Dead chuffed we were having not played together before. Barbara though is a real expert and a delight to play with . Very tolerant and hugely instructive. Learning about transfer bidding and discard strategies. Fascinating. In evening M and I went to Snowmass chapel for a Valentines evening of love songs organised, performed and directed by Paul and his partner Micha. Hugely impressive with suppport from a superb local pianist and 3 strings. A Robbie Burns song featured , but would have been improved further with some classical - Mozart , Schumann for instance.
Sat - 2nd of my 3 consecutive days off , but M working again and another hectic day for her. We had a lovely 15 minute chat with Meghan on Skype . Sadly Cormac not yet woken from his midday nap so missed him . I repeated my 8am start from the Mall on skins and had another delightful hour and a bit in the restauarant at Gwynns High Alpine before skiing over Long Shot again and back to 270 via Two Creeks and the No 3 bus. Another stunning , but very cold, day with quite beautiful snow conditions - but powder now skied out. The views to the Maroon Bells from the Long Shot summit were breathtaking . I stand there for fully 5 minutes spell bound by their beauty = and all that 15 minutes by ski ( albeit 5 miles and about 3,000 feet ) from our house. Concluded fittingly a week ( 8 days actually ) in the life of .....

Powder at last
Sorry folks . Can't manage to load pics on to blog site any longer. Just noticed that last post has exclamation marks for the intended pics. Can't see that I'm doing anything different but I'll keep trying. Meghan - help !!! May have to resort to IPad again and the cumbersome process of emailing pics to self and then uploading.
Snowmass transformed in last 10 days with 2 significant snow falls. X games at Buttermilk it seems never fails to produce the goods. Speaking of which we had a lovely evening there on Wednesday with little Gaby. The Buddy Programme laid on an evening the night before the games officially opened and we got a good taste of the events , meeting some of the stars ( Gaby asking more questions than anyone !) and seeing a bit of the practicing. Quite remarkable. Will be televised around the world and some of you may get a chance to watch.
Good week at work for both of us interspersed with some fabulous skiing / boarding. Yesterday one of our joint days off we floated through 8 inches of powder on our snowboards and at last feel we've made it to the point we can 'ride ' in reasonably steep terrain with reasonable comfort. What an amazing sensation. Switched to skis in PM and managed therefore to do Long Shot on board and skis in deepish powder on same day. A first . Hanging Valley Wall - here we come.
Had hoped to put in some good pics of skinning up Long Shot from Two Creeks last Sunday. We made it to the 3/4 way up mark with hardly a soul passing us on way down. Ski Patrol told us we were on our own when sweeping at 4pm , but no danger and we took it v carefully on way down. Mary on teleskis , me on A/T.
Went out on my teleskis next day at Snowmass in bid to try and keep up with M's progress. Having real difficulty in keeping one leg back and doing anything signicantly different from downhill skiing. Can't give up yet though.
Harry and Ian Noble arriving from London tonight to stay for 10 days . A trip Cat skiing on Richmond Ridge ( Aspen Powder tours ) planned for next Friday.

Thin snow cover
In snow terms it's been a disappointing ski season so far. But the tourists , particularly those from Europe and Australia, continue to rave about what great days they've had , so it can't be that bad. As residents and locals for 5 years we have become spoilt. In each of those 5 years we'd have had about 8 or more genuine powder days by now. Having opened a week earlier than scheduled the week before Thanksgiving due to abundance of early season snow, we've had precisely one - Sunday Jan 9, the day Bill Richards arrived from London! Here he is appearing to be schussing one of the Tiehack runs at Buttermilk. No danger of collision here. Skiing at Tiehack - now with new faster lift - makes you feel it's your private resort.

Buttermilk and the second showing immaculate technique after descending Razor's Edge.

On the way to Gwyns looking up Coffee Pot . Beaten by a cayote and and an even earlier single snow shoer.
Earlier in the season we visited Alan and Darlene in Carbondale to see their lovely little girl . Here is proud Dad with Phoenix Rain!
We're almost saying goodbye to Lee and Julie who are off to live in their new house in Hawaii having sold up here in Aspen. Lee ( an Aspen High School boy ) has been a wonderful ski companion these last few years and of course Lee and Julie organised and guided the epic White Rim trail bike trip in Utah with us in May. I suspect they'll be back a lot to ski, but we'll miss them greatly. Here they are at dinner at 270 with Dadou rightfully at the top of the table. Dadou a French ski instructor, Hawaian coffee grower , and chef extraordinaire, lives in our basement flat throughout the winter, and cooked a superb lamb dinner for us all.

Mary and I regularly snowboard here and alternatively, when the spirit moves us, skin up late in an afternoon and ski down when lifts have shut. Here are a couple of pics - one from the top of

The paucity of new snow has also opened other oppurtunities for us. We had one epic dawn skin up to Gwyn's via Lower Green Cabin and Coffee Pot followed by a superb breakfast with white table cloth, waiter service and generally the full works (repeated most enjoyably yesterday with Bill before a great day skiing with him at Snowmass). What a way to start the day. The following day ( day off for me but not for Mary ) I skinned up to top of Big Burn ( over 3,000 ft of climbing ) and got a buzz out of every foot of it . Didn't get breakfast , but there's free coffee - wow! - for those hiking up to Up 4 Pizza , and the home and freshly made pizza there is the best.

Slow start to 2011/2012 season

New lift at Tiehack . Like having our own ski area. New lift may change this - we'll see.
from top of Tiehack lift looking south to Pyramid peak
Looking across to Aspen Highlands
Attended my 1st polo event - not impressed. Felt sufficiently moved to write a letter to Editor of Aspen Times complaining about absence of a vet on the scene when a horse broke its leg.
Base Village on a day before Thanksgiving when resort opened a week early because of unusually good snow cover. Now Jan 2 and it's hardly snowed since !
Waiting for their ponies to be delivered to them
Inadequatge snow cover meant for a dangerous surface.
The inevitable happened. Pony went down with fatal injury. But was 'pursuaded' to enter a horse trailer on 3 legs and subseqently fell and repeatedy tried to stand while being carted off - as it turned out - to be euthanised later at nearby stables.
A pitiful scene.
Mary choosing her prize at Guest Services Xmas party
Julie and Lee Miller with Mary at top of Buttermilk. We had a subsequent fabulous day with them skinning to summit , good lunch and a ski down to bottom of Tiehack. They depart shortly to live in Hawai. We'll miss them greatly. Can't see Lee staying away from Aspen skiing for long though.
Another good day skinning - this time from Campground to half way up Sam's Knob.Note the clear, clear blue skies. Day after day of this. Would prefer new snow though. Haven't had even one day of powder skiing / boarding this year yet and we're 6 weeks into the season. Let it snow, let it snow , let it snow ......... ! Jobs going well though . Some good days with Gaby . Entertained M's work colleagues at Thanksgiving and Ned and Jan and Heidi at Christmas. A jolly evening reflecting backwards and planning forwards with Gracie at her house on New Year's eve. Movies , theatre ( Annie with Gaby) and M right back into violin practicing with regular lessons from Heidi. G far slower to fire up the oboe but New Year's resolution and it did happen on 1 and 2 Jan !Looking forward now to visit from Bill Richards this weekend and then Harry and Ian Noble at end of Jan. A day booked cat skiing on Richmond Ridge booked for Feb 3.
