NYC, Houston and Asheville

Meghan and Cormac and Mary and I headed off to different destinations from Edin airport early Tues morning after the funeral - M and C to Shannon and M and I to NYC. We had booked months ago tickets for Cosi fan Tutte at the Met and we were fortunate it tied in to the schedule.

Stayed at a an airbnb in Harlem, had a fun bike tour trip round central Manhattan on day, 2 meeting Carolyn and Ali for dinner in the evening . Day 3,  we met Richard's nephew Alistair Coleman at the entrance to Julliard where he gave us a great tour. He's in his first undergraduate year as a composing student. Delightful.

As it was our 44th anniversary we dined in style bfore a fabulous performance of Cosi.

Off to Houston early the next morning for M's 50th High School reunion.  Stayed with Julie and David in superb comfort, had an interesting bike tour on rented bikes round River Oaks and downtown Houston and then a lavish party at Garry Glesby's house . A big game hunter of some note apparently. Pretty disturbing really , but chaque-un ..... I guess. M enjoyed catching up with school mates many of whom she hadn't seen for 50 years.

Off the next morning to Asheville via Charlotte where we met up with Meghan who had flown in from Shannon to spend 3 days with her  95 vear old Granny ! Betty on terrific form - although of course she doesn't think so ! Drove down to Greenville, SC one day to meet Martha S for lunch.  Generally the visit was huge success. We have a routine there now making use particularly of the large swimming pool and the expansive grounds for walks, and of course our favourite Corner Kitchen.

Drove Meghan back to Charlotte midway through the week. and when we returned there, we dropped by Herb and Dagmar at their house near Spartanburg , SC. They have worked for SkiCo for about 20 years seasonally . Sadly Herb had a major stroke on Christmas eve 2017.

Back to Snowmass on the Monday night. We have one day to get straightened out and packed up for the Utah trip on day hence. No complaints though. Buick badly leaking engine coolant fluid. Maybe end of the road !

Scotland - 2nd trip - Barbara's funeral

Mary and I drove to Denver immediately after my last day's shift for the Town.  One way rental car from Aspen airport to DIA - $17 including tax ! The next day we flew to Edinburgh via JFK and Dublin.  Checked into Ibis and Meghan and Cormac arrived a couple of hours later.  Had hoped to meet Jane and Anna for a picnic lunch in Princes St gardens , but flight late. Drove with Meghan and Cormac to Hillend and climbed Kaerkettan with huge enthusiasm from Cormac. The 4 of us then had supper at the Steading. Cormac still in cracking form.

On Sun we met up at the Zoo with Jane, Johannes, Anna and Johannes' mother Marianne. Back to Ibis before heading off to collect Jane off bus at Fairmilehead and driving  to the pub in West Linton managed by Meghan's friend Seonaig and her husband James for dinner with all 5 Colemans.

Funeral the next day at Warriston.  220 people at the crematorium and 150 odd back to Royal Botanical Gardens afterwards. Charlie Robertson took the service, a lovely short tribute from Ingsay, and readings by Alastair and Sarah. A fitting and very moving farewell to my dear sister.

Scotland - first trip

This was the weekend I had booked a month ago when I heard the news of Barbara's terminal illness. I had arranged to go back for 4 days only and take Barbara and Bill to the Crieff Hydro Hotel for a good farewell visit.  We'd have played chess, drunk some good wine and shared a few laughs. Sadly it wsn't to be. She had a major stroke and died days before I was due to fly.

I decided anyway to make the visit, see Bill , my sister Ros who was holidaying with her family close to Edinburgh, and make the most of the Crieff Hydro booking by taking Jane , Johannes and Anna there.

Following morning, drove Jane and Anna for a train in Perth, and I drove to Dolphinton for an evening and night with the Colemans. Early departure from Edin airport the next morning.

Sad as the circumstances were, it was a wonderful trip and I was back on the Monday morning to work out the last 4 days of the season and my 2017/18 seasonal employment. The Thursday afternoon, I set off again for Scotland for the funeral, this time with Mary, but I'll post separately on that trip.

Had a lovely evening with the Butters at Moray Place, a pleasant walk from where I was staying in Inverleith Place

Anna comfortably asleep on the deck at Crieff hydro while we had lunch

Jane and I had a brisk walk above the Sma' Glen - gave good appetite for dinner

Ski season 2017/18

Maybe we've become spoilt with 10 brilliant snow years out of 10.  This one, as end March draws near, has fallen well below expectations. Snow pack is away down on the average and likely water shortages in the Colorado river basin are in prospect.

We did get snow eventually in about mid February, and although a bad snow year in Colorado is a far cry from a bad snow year in Europe, it was disappointing for the locals. The guests were happy enough. There always top to bottom skiing on all 4 mountains from end November, but thanks largely to significant snow blowing facilities. And of course many brilliant cloudless days and cold temps. We were saved by the bell though with 2 substantial falls at a crucial time. Disaster was staring the whole valley in the face. Worst for over 40 years.

Despite this, we've had some good powder days on skis and boards and a skinning expedition on one of our days off virtually every week since the season opened in November. Skinned up to Bonnie's today  ( March 23 ) on Ajax and pancakes right up to scratch. Should be enough snow to get us through to end of season on April 15.

Our only guests this year were Bill and Carol from Ohio and Steamboat and Martha from Atlanta - sorry Martha , no pics this year. But we did enjoy skinning up to Gwyns and Buttermilk with you 2 days running.  Great effort.  Not forgetting of course Duncan, Katy , Oliver and Maggie whom we put up in a condo in Woodbridge ( we have delightful tenants in our basement , Carolina and Rodrigo from Baroloche, Argentina for the winter ) and they had a fabulous week with us. Hugely happy days.

Now with 3 weeks to end season , we're winding down.  Jobs have gone well and although each year I say this will be my last, I've already signed on for next year ! Keeps me engaged with the local community, keeps dementia at bay ( I hope ), earns useful extra cash, and provides great benefits. Healthcare costs covered for the whole year ( despite working for only 5 months ) , dental costs, optician's and cash rec benefit in lieu of lift pass which I get as a dependent of Mary's as full time employee of Aspen Skiing Co. Mary has one of the best jobs in the village for Skico.  Guest Services desk in the Mall , Snowmass and she loves it.  Born to it in fact. Problem solving all day long with never a dull moment.

Ending on a sad note, my dear sister Barbara who came to stay with us here last summer has only days to live - a victim of bowel cancer..  I will fly back to Scotland for the funeral within the next 2 weeks in all likelihood .  She's been a wonderful elder sister and we'll miss her hugely.
