Ireland

Met up with Mary in Edinburgh on evening after returning from Newcastle. Delicious reunion dinner in an Indian restaraunt on the Bridges. Night in Budget Ibis and off on our separate ways again. Golf at Muirfield for me and Crieff and ex Dunfermline HS friends for Mary. First night at Muirfield, second at the Old Manse , Whittingehame with cousin Christian and Johnny. Again a self invitation ( and a last minute one). Particularly appreciated since they had just returned from a foreign holiday that day. Called in to Clint next morning and coffee with ex partner of 30 years at S&B/AS  Johnnie Blair. Off then to Crieff to collect Mary and back to Ibis via the Kelpies. A good catch up with Keith & Fiona in evening before heading off to Dublin and Ennis next day.

Controversial , but we approved

No chance here of blowing out my own candles. A Meghan special.

The kids had had enough of this photo business by this time

All just too much for the little fellow - I had some some sympathy

Golf at Rye

This was preceded by meetings in Edinburgh , a very comfortable night with Barbara & Bill,  golf at Muirfield, a night with Vic & Susie Wood at Spott with some good music in their fabulous music room as a bonus, a long drive south the next day with invaluable help of satnav to Clapham, dinner and night chez Harry ( recovered from exertions on Ballahullish horseshoe ), lunch with Jessica at Royal Albert Hall next day and drive down to Rye on Sussex coast.  Bill had organised everything superbly as usual.

Back to UK & Ireland - Munrobagging

I arrived back in Edinburgh under 11 weeks from leaving it in June. Mary arrives in 3 weeks time. Purpose: Munro bagging , golf and catching up with old pals. Barbara in usual form met me at airport for coffee , into the city centre to get oboe fixed, picked up some files at AS and straight off to Inverness to stay with J & J. Munro bagging starting in earnest the next day.

Mick Tighe , of The Scottish Mountain Heritage Trust , Glen Roy to whom I donated my collection of bound SMC journals ( with AWR references marked ). Here with a phenomenal collection of early skiing equipment.

Buchaille Etive Beag - Munro 3 of this trip. No companions yet.

And on one further - 4th and last of the day - Beinn Eunaich. Peter & Pippin.

On my way through Glencoe, I dropped into the NTS visitor centre and was disappointed to note the truncated version of how NTS acquired the mountains of Glencoe. Maybe the full version and account of the auction in Clachaig Hotel in 1935 will be told when the exhibition is " re-worked ' shortly as I was led to believe it will be.

Percy Unna rightly lauded, but the involvement of AWR and GSR would greatly, and more accurately, enhance the story.

Glad AWR gets a mention here. His descendants present and future - please note!

After a couple of days on own - Ben Doran, Creise and Meall a' Bhuiridhm - Harry joined me for the Ballahullish horseshoe - the 2 Munros forming Beithir. The 'boy' did good.

Duncan & Trevor's visit

With Katy and Oliver in Sydney for 10 days, Duncan took the oppurtunity of cramming in 5 action packed days with us and his Ohio cycling buddy Trevor.

Day 1 Beige joined D , T and G for epic ride from Meadow Ranch over Independence Pass to Twin Lakes and back .  91 miles and 10,000 feet of climbing.

Day 2 Mountain bike day. A round of Rim, Viewline, Deadline and Tom Blake trails from and to MR.

Day 3 2nd day on Mountain bikes. Ditch trail to Connector and Government trail whole way to Buttermilk, lunch at the Big Wrap in Aspen and back over Airline and Deadline trails to MR , D & T taking in Tom Blake trail at the end.  G baled on the last !

Day 4 Back to road bikes. Up the Frying Pan river to Ruedi Reservoir and way beyond up to the end of the paved section 33 miles from Basalt and right at the entrance to Hagerman Pass ( route of original Midland railway linking Denver with Aspen in the late 1880's ). G & M started and finished in Basalt. For D & T, mileage was dead on 100 as they arrived back at MR. Very significant climbing involved.  No stats available.  Note to ask Beige,

Day 5 Breakfast at Main St Bakery for the 4 of us and we then left D & T to bike up to Maroon Lake and back to MR. After 4 days of sunshine they got hammered by the weather ( wet and cold ) and arrived back in poor shape. Hypothermic in T's case ? Must have been close !

Day 6. D on his own ( T had returned to Columbus after day 5 - planned ! ) left v early and biked from MR up Castle Creek to Ashcroft and back by 11.  Bikes ( both road and mountain ) boxed and collected by Fedex and he was on the plane back to Oregon by 6.

Phew !
Outside Main St Bakery Aspen. G took an hour's start on Beige , D & T, and had a big breakfast ( with M who biked home to MR )  to boot. He need it all !

G got to this point near top of Pass and got good view of their ascent

Trevor leading the way.  Beige and D dropped form the slipstream !

About to descend to the other side. A long way back to here again !

Trying not to think about it.

Two days later - start of Connector leading to Government trail

We left G'ment trail by mistake at Buttermilk and ended up far higher than we intended. At Cliff House restaraunt at top of Buttermilk.  Good view across to Highlands.

The end was only 2.8 miles ( uphill ) away, but it was too much ! Time to beat a retreat for M, all 30 miles of it and over one significant climb and against a head wind all the way . D & K on their way back to clock 100 miles on returning to MR.

This was the end of the hard surface and the turning point. Hagerman Pass just 3 miles up the track - and down to Leadville from there.  The old Midland Rwy line and the only access to Aspen in the silver mining days of the 1890's. The Rio Grande rwy line from Glenwood Springs was being was being constructed at the same time making this line redundant after a very short spell of life.

On the way back.  Looking down to Ruedi reservoir half way up the Frying Pan river.

Some tired bodies on the lawn at MR after the Frying Pan day

Last outing with Gaby

We didn't know it at the time, but apart from a morning Buddy Program event ( the excellent Theatre Aspen performance of Junie B Jones ) this was our last outing with Gaby. He's now 13 and we had a formal termination of the process at Gaby's house with his mother Ligia and our superb case worker Sarah. All ending happily with lots of happy memories discussed. We hope we can stay connected in some way if only to continue to play chess with a new set we gave him.

Mary and Gaby at start of hike to Hanging Valley Lake

Looking across the Rio Grande right beside I.70 ( but you'd never know it ! )

....thus !

Another day and back on the bike trails.   Deadline trail.

M on the Tom Blake trail

Lunch with Gracie at Explorer's Bookstore

Back on the trail - Rim trail this time

Asheville & Valle Cruces - Fiddle camp

We were back in Snowmass for only 3 weeks before embarking on our next adventure.  The Jink & Diddle fiddle camp in Valle Cruces, NC. A great success and to be repeated next year if poss.  Combined well with a trip to Asheville where we had 5 days with Betty before, and 1 after. The camp at Valle Cruces being under 2 hours drive from Asheville.

Back once more in Snowmass to enjoy the rest of the Music Festival. Aida tonight in the tent and the the usual opera scenes masterclass at the Wheeler. Our music student Paul, percussionist, adds a fresh dimension to our enjoyment of events .  He played in the orchestra for the fabulous performance of Gounod's Romeo & Juliette and most impressed we were!

Here though only for 5 weeks before heading back to Scotland on Sept 15 ( M following 2 weeks later ) for more Munro bashing.

And great news on the Duncan & Katy front.  Our 5th grandchild due in Oregon in January.
Back in usual Sat morning mode before opera scenes masterclass

By Aspen standards , it's been a rainy summer

....and less need than usual for watering

Our resident student this year - a percussionist Paul who with viola player Eva cooked us a delicious dinner one evening
